Bigger Better Babies Part 1

I've always been hesitant to discuss supplementation during pregnancy or breast feeding because of the medical legal liability.
You see here in Pennsylvania we are hemorrhaging doctors faster than gas prices are climbing because of liability and other malpractice issues.
Not too long ago one of the long employed floor secretaries had to be transferred to neighboring Delaware by helicopter because none of the area neurosurgeons (and I mean 100 mile radius area!) in the area would touch her when she had a brain hemorrhage.
Embarrassing? Yes!, Disgraceful? Yes!, Reality ? Absolutely!!
She pulled through, but I can only imagine how when feels about the fact that the very same people she worked along side of for so many years could not be there to help her in her direst moments.
By the way if any of the administrative heads of the hospital where I work are reading this now I will undoubtedly be chewed a new you know what at the very least for disclosing this.
It is not just a problem in my immediate area. It is a state wide crisis.
None the less its time to talk about Fish Oil and babies. Please note some of this information comes from other countries where they do not have the same situation we do.
First in this series is the issue of: How big is your baby.
Restricted fetal growth is a very common problem. It may occur as frequently as 1 in 10 pregnancies. Lack of Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet and the number goes up to 1 in 8 !
Recent and not so recent studies have answered the question as to the relationship between omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) and the size weight and length of gestation.
A study of over 11,000 women was done to access this issue in Britain. This study found that omega 3 fatty acids led to faster and more complete fetal growth especially if they were added in the last trimester of pregnancy.
If you measure maternal essential fatty acid status, the third trimester is the time it seems to fall off. There had previously been debate as to whether mom's could increase the transfer of essential fatty acids to their babies at all.
This study also proves that supplementation in mom's can lead to supplementation in the fetus and newborns.
The implications of this study are also far reaching for the supplementation of preterm infants as well.
My bottom line on this: for bigger better babies get adequate amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Now you have the usual choices.
1) Eat lots of fish and get all the mercury lead, PVC's and PBC's they contain. Do not expect the FDA to come out and recommend fish oil supplements because that would be tantamount to making a product recommendation, which they will never do!
2) Consume lots of short chain fatty acids like flax and hope that they will be converted in adequate amounts to help your baby.
3) Consume the best Pharmaceutical Grade fish Oil in the world...the choice is yours!
